Absolutely love Larry. There’s an interview with him preparing how he prepares for race day. He studies like a student of the sport. He memorized the horse’s names as well as the jockey’s. He has flash cards that he memorizes the names by as well as what colors they’ll be wearing on race day. That’s not all, he also has to remember the name’s of the alternates in case a horse has to be scratched. Larry Collmus is the ultimate professional!

This is an incredibly difficult job. I cannot imagine how hard it would be to think so fast on your feet in order to call a horse race. I read a comment of someone criticizing Collmus, especially his call last year of Rich Strike's KY Derby win, how Rich came out of nowhere, Collmus didn't even notice him until late, and Collmus was speechless. It was a stunning race that surprised everyone. I think Collmus does his job not only exceptionally well but dramatically so, adding to the race's excitement for the fans and viewers.

I wonder if it's harder (not that it's not always difficult, with such a large field) for Collmus, now, since he's no longer calling races on a regular basis (at a track, 8-10 races a day, several days a week), having taken a job as an on-air race analyst for TVG. Race calling is a skill you lose, if you don't keep it up, for sure.

I don’t like the way Larry Collmus calls a race , he acts too precise , if the first quarter is run 22 .50 that’s the way he calls it twenty two and point five 0 seconds, instead of twenty two and two . Anyone who has been around racing knows that it means twenty two and two fifths . We could use old favorites like Fred Capossela and Tommy Roberts, they knew how to call a race .Another reason is the way he blew last years Kentucky Derby, when he never saw Rich Strike coming on the inside which was open as the Turnpike until the last second , then he almost choked to death .

This is not a good race call. This person just call horses names as opposed to calling a horse race. There is a big difference. A good race caller would have seen the race evolving at the top of the straight and call it, this guy was more interested in his "and they're into the stretch"' soundbite. He didn't mention Mage until he nearly took the lead. I think it was this guy who totally screwed up last years race call.

These top jokers lose their minds riding on the front end once again...another suicidal pace upfront setting up the calvary charge at the end...and Forte who beat mage on the square gets a questionable scratch...umm...the winner still ran big for his 4th race...well bred also...

A huge list of Champs all over Mage's pedigree. Dad was no slouch, either. If horses don't get stupid fast early fractions, that sixteenth shorter could be a near record. Can't wait! Stay healthy, kiddos.....❤

The 70,s was a different game...now they just don't race very often, I mean the past 2 derby winners were maiden victories only and no lasix anymore, but the winner is quality to eat dirt and keep coming...Forte got his number so far so we might see, we might not,

I thought it was a poor call made even worse by a picture inserted into the video on the lower right. It was no better on TV. There was no screen after the call showing placement of the field, the odds or the payout. All traditional things you would expect at the Derby. He called four places but even that was difficult to ascertain. He called first and fourth place but otherwise said something about a photo. This was the worst Derby call I can remember. I would have heard my first Derby call in 1945 - still in my crib.
