Sham ran easily 2 of the fastest ever times at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Just happened to come in second to the horse with the records at both tracks. Probably would have run a much more conservative Belmont against a different field, but then again, maybe it was just too far for him, especially after maximum effort put forth the previous two races.

I met Penny Chenery at the Virginia Derby some years ago. She was sitting alone. Alone! Had a great five minute conversation with her. She told me that the move Secretariat made at the Preakness was all him and not the jockey. That was his greatest moment she said.

Two amazing trivia feats: 1. Secretariat was the first horse to run the derby in under two minutes, at 1:59 and 2/5 seconds. I believe it's happened only one other time since, in 2001. 2. One thing that really sticks with me is just how little Turcotte goes to his whip during all three races. Basically just a few times at the top of the stretch in this race and that’s it. He knows exactly what Secretariat is capable of and just lets him run.
I still remember Secretariat back then at 13 years old. This horse was a big deal and captivated the country.
Secretariat was the greatest athlete of the 20th century.
Loved the movie and Secretariat was so special. He will live forever in the hearts of Triple Crown fans.
Bear in mind that Secretariat never tripped the starting timer in the 3 triple crown races, which means he ran them slightly faster than posted times.
I never tire of watching the "Immortal" "SECRETARIAT's" incredible runs.. Yes "Sham" was a good horse and in any other year may even have won the coveted American "Triple Crown",..! It was just his misfortune to have been born the same year as "Big Red". Whenever I see the Legend that was and still is "SECREATRIAT", my mood always brightens... I may well never see another like him, in my lifetime(I am 73 now) but thankfully we still have videographic records to thrill to..!
Big red proved his dominance that day. And telegraphed his status of legend.
Wow 50 years later seeing Secretariat starting slow and coming around the outside in the Kentucky Derby and then last in the Preakness and suddenly shot out of a cannon and in the Belmont Stakes he went right to the rail and boom took off with no messing around and bye bye Sham a GREAT horse and just bad timing to be with the great Secretariat!
The grreatest 3 year old to ever step foot on a race track. We'll never see another.

@@reesewahl5488 Secretariat raced at 2 and 3 years of age. He was voted best 2 year old colt and Horse of the Year in 1972. In 1973, Secretariat was voted best 3 year old colt and horse of the Year.
He was the greatest ❤️

I believe Man O' War is the "goat" but Secretariat sure was the prettiest.
