That is the perfect combination of Horse and Jockey. Imagine a horse that was so good and not being in the "Glory click crowd", getting in because of a last minute scratch and an incredible talented jockety that understood the horse so well that he could sneak him up on the inside and then pull a pit maneuver to show the horse open space ahead. Should go down in the books as one of the best Kentucky Derby ever.

That was a superb KD race and one def for the books! Also, thank you, announcers, for giving credit to that jockey who guided him! Was hearing extremely little about him and all the manouvering was credited to the horse itself!!! Thank you for pointing out that the jockey's thoughts were obviously on how to reach that front pack and the path he took to accomplish that incredible feat!

This was a great race, but you should watch Secretariat's Triple Crown run for amazing race's. He broke last out of the gate on the first two and won both by about 2 1/2 Lengths, setting track records on both (the Kentucky Derby in 1:59 and 2/5), about 3 seconds faster than this race. Then he won the Belmont by 31 Lengths, while setting a track record there also.

Yup. Locking a horse up, running the crap out of them, sitting on their back beating the heck out of the horse to engage the horse's flight response is such a great performance. In a few years the owners will kill the horse to collect insurance and will give some sort of public BS reason why the horse died. These horses live terrible lives.

The Preakness will reveal a lot, i.e. is Rich Strike for real or did the horse and jockey just happen to have the race of a lifetime at the Kentucky Derby. If he wins that one as well, I like his chances at the Belmont. There have been many instances of horses with a shot at the Triple Crown faltering at the Belmont, done in by the longer race length. However, Rich Strike's remarkable stretch run at the Derby shows he has tremendous stamina.

Yes, unfortunately. There isn't a huge bonus anymore for winning all three races, but you'd think the prestige of winning the Triple Crown (not to mention what the owner could charge in stud fees) would be sufficient incentive for any Derby winner to run in the Preakness. Resting the horse is understandable, but still....

This was one of the smartest races I've ever seen a jockey run. The Kentucky Derby is the perfect race for a long shot to win. Rich Strike was fresh due to not sprinting early (see Messier). By staying in the back the opening came while close to a dozen horses ran wide then hitting the rail at the head of the stretch giving him a shorter track to race on possibly saving maybe 1.5 to 2 seconds on the rest of the leaders. This is what makes Horse Racing great.

It's interesting how different the horse racing community and other sports are, regarding where the credit for the win goes to. They treated the owner, the trainer, vet and the real hero very different. In football the quarterback gets the credit, usually. The the coach and finally the owner recieve credit. I love horse racing evan as a child. The jockey is the real hero. Just take a look at NASCAR or Formula 1...the owner are not the heros nor the chief mechanic. Just saying. This horse was practically a rookie, and that Venezuelaen jockey was barely mentioned. That jockey was brilliant.
