It depends on the strength of the bump, if they pinch them off, if it causes a reaction to the horse that got bumped (like change of finishing position), and if there is an objection, you don't usually see an objection outside of the first 4 spots though because those are the money spots.

Right. I watched this horse in other races and this horse has a kick and pulls away at the end of the race. I don't think it mattered what happened because the horses couldn't catch him at the end anyway. Still enjoyed the race though.

Obviously, yes. He was the best horse. In and of itself, he was the fastest and legitimately won the race. His finish after the incident was impressive. But he bolted way out of his lane and made other horses check up. You simply can't do that. The decision was correct.

The true winner is Maximum Security the winner was a sour loser in my opinion

So many commenters here got this wrong. MS was all over the place, even before the move that got him DQ'ed. He was jumping lanes all around the far turn, and was just fortunate that only the big wobble impeded only one competitor. And, for CH, it is so hard to recover momentum after having to slow down, especially after over a minute of running already. It sucks, but it was an obvious call that is made in horse racing every day. Not an easy call, but an obvious one. Heck, it's not only in horse racing. Distance running, cycling (Peter Sagan got thrown out of the TDF for essentially the same thing), sailing, even motor racing: if you change lanes and you're not 100% clear of those behind, you're at fault.

@@davidkent8606 you can change lanes only if you have space between horses around you and behind you. Horse races are not bumper cars. Their are rules for a reason. Blame the poor ride by the jockey as he lost the race not the horse.

Maximum Security was the best horse in this race but it doesn’t matter. You can’t go over multiple lanes and force a horse to steady and expect it to not cost you. It’s unfortunate but fair.

I remember wanting asking my dad if a horse ever got disqualified. Then later. I find out the horse got disqualified. 😂😂

Pretty tough to maintain total control while coming around the bend at 45 mph in the mud.

Maximum Security was only in the lead the entire race because he cut off War Of Will twice or War Of Will goes right on by and probably wins. Each time War Of Will went to pass Maximum Security, Saez drifted out and bumped him.

@@toddgierach2831 Saez cuts him off before the top of the stretch when War Of Will is about to go by him and then War Of Will comes back anyway despite being cut off and Saez cuts him off a second time in the stretch as he's about to go by him again. And then after taking War Of Will out of the race, Saez shoots back to the rail and takes out Code of Honor who was about to take the lead on the rail. An incredibly dirty ride and a very stupid ride because Saez might have had the best horse if he just rides him straight and clean. Maybe War Of Will goes by him and wins or maybe Max Sec wins the stretch battle. No one will ever know

The lights reflecting in the water on the track I believe is what caused Maximum Security to dodge out. It appeared on the track quite bright as opposed to the other locations where there were light reflections.

@@bgore88 It was not questionable, and it is the opposite of a black eye. Maximum Security clearly drifted out of lane approaching the final turn, impeding the progress of the horse next to him. The rules say you cannot do that. It doesn't matter a bit that the eventual winner was not directly affected at that moment. You can not cut off the progress of another horse. The rules say that if you do that, you get disqualified. Ignoring an obvious infraction simply because it's a big race would have been a much bigger stain. They did the right thing. Congratulations to Country House.

After looking at this, Maximum Security ran a cleaner race than i thought at the time,and even then i didn't think he ran that bad, and i bet on the #1 horse War of Will.Since the jockey and trainer on the #1 didn't call an objection, i thought the stewards call was terrible.

Maximum security is very fast and could have won, but it’s the jockeys fault. He got selfish. I know all about the derby rules and your supposed to stay in your area if you watched to full thing you see he went he out the back in a lot. Which could have caused the horse behind him to fall making more horses and jockeys to get hurt. When watching the full derby you could see the jockey knew he screwed up and so did the owner of the horse.

War of will's would have taken the Kentucky Derby if He had not been hit . That broke his stride. He was the best horse that day ! He would have been going for the Triple Crown this weekend !

I have no idea who the NFL refs are or why they were involved -- but no, they are not "officiating" the KY Derby. The ones who rule are the stewards -- and it took them 14 or 15 very long minutes to DQ Maximum Security. At the track, the stewards are like kings, and at a top-class track like CHD they rule absolutely. Only their decision counts. When they announced a stewards' inquiry, I thought WTF? -- and then I watched the race replays in slow motion, and yikes. As a racehorse owner myself, I couldn't believe what was on the replay. This race came so close to being a hideous pile-up that I hope to NEVER see such a thing again.

I thought Maximum Security ran a great race, Country House too. Buy really, all the horses ran a good race to me. Its hard for a horse to even be qualified to run in these big league races. Beautiful horses 🥰🐎🐴💙

Ngl, a lot of people in the comments seem really biased. They love Maximum Security, so it's an emotional thing for them. I grew up riding and I keep tabs on racing on and off, but I'm not particularly attached to any current runners, so I feel confident that my opinion is pretty objective. I'm not an expert and I don't claim to be, so it IS possible I'm wrong, but imho he deserved to be DQed. He definitely impeded other horses/jockeys at least twice. It's on camera. It cannot be denied that it happened, even though many are trying to excuse it. Maybe it was intentional. Maybe it wasn't. But either way, the jockey should have known better. I get that people love this horse and wanted to see him keep a perfect record like some kind of fairy tale, but he was fairly disqualified, and it was pretty much entirely the hockey's fault (weather played a part, sure, but everything comes down to how the jockey handles the situations as they come). It's too bad horses/jockeys don't get disqualified more often for the things they do during races. I hope this causes jockeys to play dirty less, and to be more aware. I'd actually like to see DQs be considered more often, and I hope this race opens the doors for more careful consideration over what actually happens during these races. Too much gets swept under the rug in order to glorify a storybook type win. Congrats to the actual winner, Country House.

Ya, it was easy to do after wiping out all of the contenders trying to catch him. All you saw was a result of the action, not a result if there had been no interference in the race.

Tyler clipped the heels of Maximum Security causing him to duck out.

Yes. What a shame... maximum security had never lost a race. Completely robbed... of course the noise is disturbing. And you can see the jockey stayed centre on the horse. The jockey would have to have balls of steel and a screw loose to try and maneuver the horse like that in those conditions!!!!!! The owner of maximum security is appealing the decision today. It needs to be reversed. NO CAP

@spanish rampage True, rules are rules, but they should have conditions on this rule when you have the track conditions that they had on Saturday. There was no indication that the jockey did anything wrong, so all you can really come away with is that Maximum Security was adjusting to the lane conditions of the track in the turn to keep himself upright and preventing a REAL tragedy.

There are rules. Guessing you watch the sport once a year so you don’t know there is more to it than just going fast. Look up racing accidents and you’ll see why the disqualification happened

He clearly moved off line to bump the horses to the outside, then moved back in to cut off the inside horse. How much more obvious do you need it to be. He was about to be overtaken by 4 horses.

The horse's owner Gary West removed Jason Servis after he was indicted and charged on Monday in connection with a widespread international scheme to administer performance-enhancing drugs to the animals in order to make them run faster and boost their endurance. Maximum Security's new trainer is Bob Baffert, according to ESPN. Servis is charged with giving his horse SGF-1000, a performance enhancing drug, and then suggesting it's use to trainer Jorge Navarro, who has also been charged. The indictment states he gave PEDs to "virtually all the racehorses under his control."The charges also say he conspired with a veterinarian to make the drug test appear as a false positive for a different substance. The substances allegedly administered can cause many health complications in horses, including fractured legs, heart problems and even death, due to overexertion and lessening of pain sensitivity,

I agree. He was clearly the best horse. The track was a mud bog, and sometimes that changes things, but I certainly like his chances in Baltimore. The decision was correct, but he wasn't going to be beaten.

Objectively looking at the for the first time, Max Security forced the 3rd and 4th horse to the back half of the pack. Who is to say they wouldn’t have pulled ahead on the straight away? Country house made a great pass on the second half of the corner to just squeeze by the two horses that were forced to drop back. Max Security may have been the quickest in the final stretch, but he still broke the rules, made contact, potentially almost caused a dangerous accident for the jockeys and the horses, and didn’t allow for us to see what those other two horses could have done on the stretch

Was a teenage track-rat in the 70's. Have watched races years ago at Faremont Park and the horses were all over the track in the mud. MaxSec won the 'Derby.

We dont know if it would have altered the outcome. I think it is very possible that it would have.

I don’t follow horse racing that much, but in auto racing that’s a definite blocking penalty. You have to stay with your line throughout the entire corner, and give your opponent space on the track. Maximum Security violated both, and most certainly gained an advantage by doing so.

Maximum Security started looking around just before that incident, and when the rest of the horses caught up, he ran outa space and had to look fro a seam to come through... I have no idea why incidental contact would disqualify the horse... Vegas in control. But the horse is a champion of champions...

Incidental contact at the speed their going could cause death. It's part of the reason its frowned upon. 2 jockeys had to break stride as a consequence of Saez poor riding. Even if the horse was the best, his jockey was not. It's a team effort

The same rule applies to people races. You’re not supposed to block somebody else in their lane, making them slow down or shorten their stride. You get disqualified.

Maximum Security ran a great race I hope he can come back again to another horse race one day...

It looked to me like green and pink silks bumped into each other a bit too but I do not agree with this ruling, I don't think any of the interference really effected the results of the race... But, can't change anything, we know who truly won at least. I usually like seeing the underdog win but only when its real.

Side-by-side bumping is allowed, the problem occurs when a horse jumps sideways 3 lanes to impede a horse then jumps 3 lanes back the other way to bump the inside horse. That's too dangerous and cannot be allowed.

These horses are trained rigorously to track straight and while there is a little leeway given on a sloppy track 3lanes out and back clipping in front of one close enough that the one horses nose is nearly on the jockeys back and then slamming into the side of the runner on the inside!? If any of my family had been sitting on the front 5 horses I dont think I would have been able to breathe the whole race. Granted I also believe that if the track had been dry MS's tracking would have been straight as an arrow like usual and he'd have taken the lead by a full furlong!

So glad no horses 🐎 or jockeys 🏇got physically hurt.

Jeff Mejia I’ll have you know that the jockey on Long Range Toddy also claimed foul against Maximum Security, not just Country House, and Maximum Security did indeed impede Long Range Toddy (the 18 horse). Horses are always placed behind the last horse they impeded if they’re DQ’d for multiple interferences and if you look at the official race results, you’ll see that Maximum Security was placed behind Long Range Toddy, the last horse he interfered with

US and UK horse racing has many differences. Look at the grand national vs the kentucky derby. They are two very different races. In the US, we run on any surface as long as it isn't thundering. Just the way we do things.

MSgames2000 the “grand national” is a 4mile STEEPLECHASE. Your “Derby” is loosely based on The Derby. I suggest you check out recordings of this race to see how horses should be respected when running a race.
