I am so impressed with Forever Young. He has travelled around the world and still tough enough, after being bumped into by SL, forced to run wide, still almost win the race. Love that horse

I have to give the jockey on Mystic Dan credit...he wasn't beating the crap out of him. He was fanning the whip & encouraging him. That horse has heart to spare.

As an Australian I have to say I love this American commentator Larry Collmus, but as you say he was calling the leader Fierceness at the top of the straight when it was actually Mystik Dan and the pity is, this race was such a classic that he's going to re-live that error thousands and thousands of times.

Considering what he had to overcome, Forever Young ran the best race. If T O Password had not broken a half step slow or forced 5 wide in the final turn, he could have been up there too. Not to mention, I think the jockey dropped his crop around the 1/8 pole. Both showed that they belong with the best 3-year-olds.

The normal thoroughbred has an 8-9 lb heart…when they did a post mortem on Secretariat that horse’s heart was over 20 lbs! Secretariat was a freak of nature. Or maybe genetically modified…who knows 🤷🏼‍♂️

Punched his way through a hole that wasn't really there, and shoved the other horse to the outside. That was what won the race. A lot of horses won't make that move pinned by the rail., but Mystik Dan was all heart.

-​@@SeaJayAudit That horse lost races in Arkansas due to getting nervous when bumped against the rail. For 30 days in a row it was trained to bump back when bumped and started winning.

What a race!!! My heart couldn’t almost take it…congrats to all three!!!

Absolutely fantastic ride by Hernandez...broke great, saved all the ground, took the rail opening perfectly...... won on a $10k horse beating a 2.3 million horse by a nose....thats how u pull off upsets

If you watch the UAE derby, there is no question he was the best horse in that race. He was 3 wide the whole trip and won easily. The question was WHAT DID HE BEAT?

Thrilling ! That is what makes an unforgettable horse race --- and this for the 150th run of the Kentucky Derby with a photo finish! WOW! Congrats to all -- particularly to Brian Hernandez and Mystik Dan who has more than earned a few additional treats today or tomorrow !

It was SO close. I really though Sierra Leone got there but when I watched the replay it was definitely Mystik Dan. Congrats to Mystik Dan and his team!!!

Maystik Dan fought off a horse on the rail and that made the difference...the shortest distance....on the rail..great ride!

@@Spacerockrider72755ibmb He actually didn't foul him. There was a small hole there and the jockey simply threaded the needle. Track Phantom was already done by this point, so there was no need to foul bc his jockey knew at that point that he wouldn't win anyways

I was cheering so hard for West Saratoga! His story and his trainer had the best story coming in to today! Good run Larry and West Saratoga!

Someone explain why Larry Collmus, the announcer, was saying at 1:46 "and Resilience has now moved up to take the lead" when clearly Mystik Dan had taken the lead, 😳which announcer doesn't say until 1:54 when Mystik Dan had been in the lead since 1:44 at least. 💀In fact, rewatching it, Resilience NEVER takes the lead. 😅

He messed this up, he called both Stronghold and Resilience coming on the outside and just said "Resilence" again rather than Mystik Dan. He called Mystik Dan earlier in the race so he certainly knew he was there.

Screaming Larry missed Mystic Dan for a quarter mile while Travis Stone absolutely nailed the call....

In 1978 I got to hang out in the barn after the Santa Anita Derby. I was introduced to Affirmed and I told that beautiful horse he was going to win the Triple Crown 👑-history was made. ❤

I just want to say as great as secretariat was, you really can't compare times today to times 50 years ago. Rules have changed (they have cracked down on drug use and whipping as well as other rules). Tracks today have actually been made slower than back then due to safety reasons. I am not saying these horses would have beat secretariat because I have no doubt that secretariat would have smoked these horses as the time was extremely slow this year. However, comparing the times secretariat made 51 years ago is not really reasonable considering how much has changed in racing.

The tracks of the 1970's were scraped and concrete hard. There is no comparison to today's tracks.

Forever Young was best in this race. Wide throughout almost knocked off its feet by Sierra Leone to only lose by a head.

@@ernesthercher5193 -LOL. Some butt hurt people think he should have. Last time I looked, the best horse in the race is the one who crossed the finish line FIRST. Hugging the rail might be the shortest distance you have to cover, but it’s also where you have the most traffic to contend with.

#11 Forever Young's jockey should've claimed foul against #2 Sierra Leone's rider. Definitely had a chance to get put up to second, there was a lot of contact and may have cost him a nose or a neck 🤨🤔 Anyone agree?

Disagree, because none of the bumping was intentional. You see this every year around the final curve, the horses lean towards the rail down the stretch, and bumping happens all the time. Even if FY's jockey did decide to lodge a complaint, it would be rejected. It's bumping. It happens. Move on with your life.

Larry’s time has past. That was one of the best derbys ever and he missed the horse on the lead, and made that call one to watch the race with the volume off. Was strangely obsessed with a horse that wasn’t really doing anything, Fierceness and Stronghold… great race and awful call

I loved hores and started watching races young. I remember seeing Secretariat race( still my favorite). Maybe for a little excitement take a look at some of those old races. Sadly, seeing Ruffian break down ended my love of horseracing.

If you watch closely. Jockey on the 2 horse clearly grabs Forever young jockey whip out of his hands. Before that happen I saw a whip go flying in the middle of the screen. Did anyone else see this. Forever young won this race hands down. Bumped all the way down stretch.

Shocking commentary guys, the greatest 2 minutes in sports deserves better than that, come on. A tale of tough horses and a jockey who was determined to get his horse on the inside (that was the long photo delay, normally a stewards and DQ in America but Kentucky wanted to avoid it) and a jockey who took a horse’s moment in history away by giving it too much to do. Great racing brilliant event as always 🎉… CONGRATULATIONS MYSTIC DAN 🎉🎉

Boy, that was exciting! Really didn't think that Mystik Dan would pull it off but was hoping McPeek/Hernandez could take the Oaks/Derby double. Brian doing his best Calvin Borel imitation coming up that rail. So happy for the whole team!

In the video it is clearly seen that Sierra Leone charges in and hits Forever Young almost making him fall, the Japanese should have filed a claim against Sierra Leone

NASCAR and horse racing are killing it with photo finishes this year

if Sierra Leone had run straight and not kept bumping Forever Young, he probably would have won (also i feel so bad for Forever Young's connections, they were so close to winning! but there's always next time!) and to everyone criticizing Larry's call, back off. Everyone makes mistakes; even the GOATs slip up every once in a while anyways, what a thriller of a finish for the 150th Derby!

Forever Young got boxed in the whole race then finally got out and was bumped all the way done the stretch. He will win the next two races, bank.

If Sirrea didn't block Forever Young for the whole finishing straight the Japanese horse would've won it easily.

It wasn’t intentional. The horse has been known to commonly lean towards the rail when running down the back stretch. Really the only downfall of the horse.

@@davidvatu2563 yes but down the last furlong, if he’s trying to pull the horse straight and the horse keeps leaning, there isn’t much you can do. Watch some other races/pre race coverage on Leone. It’s a known issue.

What a race. I will say that was a horrible call of the race lol. Down the stretch he's calling a horse taking the lead that was actually 3rd lol. Come on man. Mystic Dan was well in front as he saying another horse had taken the lead.

If you notice, there's a break in the call when he's trying to call that Resilience and Stronghold are coming up on Fierceness's outside on the turn, it's only a half second pause, but it is there, so he likely looked down at his program/flash cards to see which two horses those were, and may have missed Mystik Dan coming through on the rail when he did. And bc track announcers use binoculars to call races, and bc binoculars have a small view point, Mystik Dan was probably out of his sight again until he set the binoculars down when the horses got close enough to see without them

Great horse! I was cheering for Forever Young! (And made a small bet on him lol)

Up until now the 05’ Derby was my favorite BUT THIS IS THE BEST BY FAR! Mystik Dan holding off the closers and getting the Oaks and Derby double, Sierra Leone and Forever Young slugging it out for 2nd & 3rd, and even T O Password did great! Im so proud of the Japanese! And hopefully this encourages them to keep trying because this was a huge performance.

Oh yeah, Giacomo passes 11 in the stretch, 6 of which he passed in deep stretch. Only one sports writer thought he'd win. Heck, I saw the Hollywood Futurity in person, and the top 3 were all out and matched each other stride for stride.

Doesn't get any closer than that. What a beautiful race

Derby is about who gets the best trip and stays out of trouble. Both Leon and Young ran better races, going wide, pounding into each other down the stretch and a stride or two more and both would have passed the winner. Congrats to Hernandez, he’s been around a long time. The Derby is the race you want to win. You’ll have that forever. If Baffert goes to Baltimore then your Triple Crown hopes will end there.

Terrible call by this announcer. Totally missed Mystik Dan until the very end. This was an all-jockey/starting position win. The great starting position and the rail run by Brian Hernandez was as perfect as it needed to be. Congratulations!

What a race three way photo finish my horse Sierra Leone loses by nostril , Forever Young 3rd. What a race he run in a thriller . congratulations mystik Dan .

It's funny how foul play it took to deprive Forever Young of the victory. Shame that a Sierra Leonean jockey grabbed the jockey and reins of a Japanese horse.

Congrats to Mystic Dan. Got the ground saving trip...Forever Young seems like the real deal...look for this horse if he stays healthy to do great things, probably should have won today for a number of factors including the ride 😉

Great finish!!! I wonder if Sierra Leone and his cousin Forever Young weren't bumping each other in the stretch, would either of them had one. Great race and finish either way.

Ive watched the last 3 derby's ,, I can deal with the 4 hour preshow for the 2 minutes of excitement.

Wonderful race. It's still amazes me that Secretariat records have been standing for 50 years!

Sierra Leone had a terrible trip plus was fouled down the lane! Mystic Dan saved 4 lengths cutting the corner! Sierra Leone much the best!!

Forever Young is a grinder.More than likely trainer will take horse back to Japan for rest.But if they decide to run in the Belmont(doubtful they'll run in the Preakness), he's going to be tough to beat.

I would like to know if Forever Young got hurt when bumped at the head of the stretch...Sierra needed to be put in 3rd place ...and Forever Yound 2nd...1/2 million dollars difference...this horse kept running even though Sierra mugged him..Forever is a ..good horse...

In my eyes, Sierra Leone was the best horse but with the widest trip. You can argue he bumped into Forever Young but I didn’t see it to be that bad. This commonly happens in stretch duels. It wasn’t like FY was impeded. But FY bobbled at the break similar to Just A Touch and got squeezed. You can argue he had the worst trip of the three. While Mystic Dan had the best trip of the three and that’s why he won. 2024 3YO Rankings 1. Sierra Leone 2. Mystic Dan 3. Forever Young 4. Catching Freedom 5. Fierceness It’s still possible for Forever Young to win an Eclipse with limited starts in North America. We see it all the time with Europeans winning Eclipse awards for top male or female turf champion. Check how Forever Young rider rode him. Is that the Japanese way of riding? I found it a bit odd. Watch the break and then the finish. Very contrasting to someone like Pincay. I’m not sure Sierra Leone will run back for the Preakness being it’s only two weeks later and being a shorter race favoring speed horses. Most trainers these days skip the next two. And I’m not sure SL will win the Belmont as that actually favors horses with tactical speed although SL would enjoy those longer sweeping turns like Forego and Easy Goer both did. The race I see Sierra Leone winning is the Travers as he’ll love that long stretch at Saratoga and maybe something like the Jockey Club Gold Cup and Dubai World Cup. He’s a good horse. Again, nothing amazing like Forego, Easy Goer, or Zenyatta. They still ran that final quarter in 26 and change. That’s 1:37 and then over 2:03. This crop hasn’t shown to be exceptional. The only horse with 100+ Beyers is Fierceness and he doesn’t run like his name at all. He should be renamed Meekness. Perhaps Sierra Leone losing the Derby can keep him around longer?

Forever Young impressed me because we’d been told he hated kickback but got covered in mud and still almost won. I think he has a real chance at the Belmont if the field is smaller and the jockey doesn’t mess up. I’m not sure why he was bouncing so much in his saddle. I believe the Belmont Stakes will be held at Saratoga this year so that might be another showdown with Sierra Leone. I don’t think any of these horses have a chance at the Preakness. Baffert is waiting with a fresh horse. Overall great race. Awful call.

Winner had perfect position.

That was insane! You had to watch it again and again!

No he didn't. He's pulling Sierra's head to the right, trying to make him go to the right, the whole time. Look at Sierra - who doesn't look straight ahead. Sierra's jockey attempts a "short reign." You must let go a bit with your hand, and move your grip "up" the reigns. Seems mis-timed - his left hand loses grip on the reign and shoots out. But he never hits Forever, nor his jockey. Forever's jockey pulls an acrobatic, but courteous move after 1:59. Not wanting to strike Sierra, he taps Forever's LEFT rump, with the crop in his RIGHT hand, by twisting around/standing in the saddle. (Watch it in slo-mo. Wow! It's impressive.) It all looks like a fight - until you watch a few times, and see what's going on. After the first bump, both horses leaned on each other. It's a "stallion/dominance" thing. And both jockeys acted sportsmanlike towards each other. Thus, no inquiry, no foul.

Sierra Leone should have been placed third-he kept lugging in and bumping Forever Young. Stewards missed that or they let it go when they shouldn't have. They should never have pulled down Maximum Security when they did that.

Secretariat was and still is the man the 1973 Kentucky Derby winner 1 MINUTE AND 59 SECONDS no horse has run the race faster then him he ran faster each quarter as the race went on the triple crown winner and the best horse ever this year 2024 winner 2 minutes and 3 plus seconds not even close

On the last straight line, the second jockey is using his hands to interfere! ! Can't the US fight fair and square ! ?

Forever Young was pushed by Sierra Leone the entire stretch. I’m surprised an inquiry wasn’t called. Can’t wait to see Forever Young’s next race.

FY’s G-grandsire Sunday Silence also had a bumpy/weavy Derby, and had a gritty nose-nose Preakness battle with an epic rival that was much bigger and fancier more “blue-blooded” than him. FY has raced in Europe and likes the European style of running down the center of the homestretch; but he got crowded out when his rival lost power steering. Hope to see SL and FY race again in the future!

Wow, what a race!

Amazing seeing those creatures at full speed galloping.

overall a really brilliant race- some incredible riding by al three jockeys and massive heart in both Forever Young and Sierra Leone as well. SUPER impressed by the way Brian Hernandez kept Mystik Dan right at the rail, just behind the leaders for so long, and as soon as that gap opened up, he took that slot. really really well done.

Wow, only 20 lengths behind Secretariat's time, those horses were really flying!

Secretariat was an all - time great and his time was very impressive but the track was extremely fast that day and the one today was probably heavy with all the rain, lately. Mystic Dan, also, had to squeeze through traffic on the rail and it took a lot out of him. He ran an awesome race even if it wasn't all that fast !

to think that humans evolve and horses do not. you have to remember steroids were LEGAL in horse racing in those days not to mention the dirt in 73 was like running on concrete almost. you simply cant compare. barry bonds was the best hitter to ever play the game in my eyes but thanks to 3 types of roids or PEDs he used and one of them he used helped with eye site which a lot of people dont realize. so next time we want to compare today horses with Secret-ariat lets think about this? we had a nice clean race this year because they cracked down on Bob Bafferts drugged up horses.

@@josephyodiceyodice5990 Agree was a great race today. But the racetrack in 1973 was *not* lightning, merely fast. What made the time so fast is you had literally the two thoroughbreds (cousins) with the largest measured hearts in global history, going at each other hammer and tongs down the straight, to record the two fastest Kentucky Derby times of all time! That's right, Sham ran the Derby faster than any other horse in history, besides his cousin Secretariat.

Forever young should be the champion, if it is not bumped by the No. 2 more than twice!

The Derby always has Too many horses.. The fastest horse does not always win, the one with the best course does.. Not what racing is meant to decide..

Actually, it's often the best trip that wins in any race, the best horse doesn't always win the race if they have a bad trip. Many variables have to come into play to win any race, especially one like the Derby
