Gretzky's 1963 assists will outlast his 92 goal season record. One would have to average about 100 assists a year for 20 years to break that record.

I agree with others that 163 assists in one season is by far his most impressive record. Mario Lemieux averaged about 80 assists per season. Gretzky doubled that in 1985/86. It was more assists than anyone else had ever scored points at the time. And he still somehow potted another 50+ goal season at the same time. Ridiculous.

19:17 Goal tending used to be such an exciting and beautiful position to watch. Then, the NHL allowed the equipment to start getting ridiculous in the early-mid 90s leaving us with the boring lego walls that just shift back-and-forth along the goal line like the table-top game (and the sharp decline in scoring until recent years). As a kid of the 80s, I feel very fortunate to be a part of the last generation to see this style of goal tending. The agility, flexibility, quickness and athleticism of these guys was incredible.

At about 7:20 Billy Smith said out of the 19 series the Islanders won in a row he thinks at least 10 of them went to 7 games. I'm not sure what his point was, maybe proving it was a tough struggle. I checked, and actually 0 of them went 7 games, and 2 of them went the distance (first round was 5 game series). I think that's probably more impressive.

The best thing about Gretzky is that he never ACTED like he's the top scorer, he always acted like he was just a normal hockey player, maintaining the mantra that he never did it to get in the paper, he just wanted to be great every night and score, and well, he did

The New York Islanders' 19 Consecutive Playoff Series Triumphs including 4 Straight Stanley Cups will stand especially in the current era of free agency and eight figure salaries in which a club's chemistry becomes debased.

I'm sure that Selanne was drafted in 88; he was a rookie when draft classmate Trevor Linden was a FIFTH year player. He didn't score 76 as a teenager.

He couldn't come over right away because in Finland he had to do 2 years in the military plus he broke his leg and had to recover before he came to Winnipeg. Linden never came close to 76 goals in 92-93 with years of NHL experience. His best season was 80 points in his whole career and never scored 40 goals in a season. What are you trying to get at?

Great records but was also a different era too. The goalies were just standing there and not even trying to save the puck like nowadays.

@@TheNewsstandMan probably 92 goals. Not because it's likely to be broken, but because people have come close. Gretzky's single season assists record OTOH is as much or more a statistical outlier as +124. The advances in tactics make it improbable that any one person will ever put up points like Gretzky & Lemieux did, but they also make +128 all but impossible. Thats +1.5 per game. Changes in tactics & equipment & league structure make for far more than 10 NHL records that would take a massive statistical outlier to even approach. All ten in this video are such records.

Not a record but just an odd stat. In Wayne's 215 point season and Mario's 199 point season, neither won the Pearson in their best statistical seasons. Mario didn't even win the Hart.
