The problem is not with him doping. For Lance Armstrong, during the 7-year window when he won every Tour de France, 87% of the top-10 finishers (61 of 70) were confirmed dopers or suspected of doping. The problem is with how he attacked people, the way he treated people. Thats what he did wrong.

But i dont think we should vilify him for the rest of his life. Obviously hes not a very compassionate guy, but most top athletes seem to have a level of narcissism. At some point we can forgive someone for their mistakes, that doesnt mean you have to like them.

The people defending him are probably unaware of his attempts to ruin people's lives. He went on screwing with people's live to mask who he really was until he was completely exposed, and had nowhere else to run. Probably would continued his sociopathic behavior until he died if the mountain of evidence wasn't publicized. I grew up a huge fan, watched all of his tour wins, read his autobiography......but unfortunately he's a vile person. One of his biggest talents is convincing people he is a genuine and good person. People should really look up everything he did (not just the doping) before defending this guy.

He realized it was a gun fight and he jumped in headfirst. hes a d*ckhead for how he treated those close to him who were uncomfortable with covering for him, but that same vehemence is how you get 7u world titles in the hardest sport event. maybe the lesson is winning isnt everything. but to argue hes a cheater whenn 99% of the field is doing the same stuff is a weak argument

@Lee Shackelford you made this fact up. But I'll give you some names - Carlos Sastre has never been associated with or to any doping scandal. Cadel Evans too. David Montcoutie was known to have not doped on his team as he has a fear of needles. There's 3 top contendors alone. Armstrong even said Sastre winning a TdF was the impetus for his comeback, as he was so scathing of Sastre's ability he felt he could still beat him... when actually Sastre winning the Tour was a sign it might finally be heading towards being clean, even if that meant the times up the mountains were slower than before. But also with Lance, its not even about the doping. Its about everything else. Ivan Basso doped, Alejandro Valverde doped, Alberto Contador probably doped - none of them publicly shamed and ruined the careers and lives of multiple people, blackmailed the governing body and intimidated a legal witness.

Because of the cardiac vascular collaterals he built up (we are both RNs) he avoided major heart damage. Thank you, Lance. I have my own opinion on what and how he did and most importantly how arrogant he was back then.(Very) On the other hand he was the one who got me out of bed @4:30, he was the one who made me ride like a maniac and lose 30+kg and he was the reason I kept saying myself, if a cancer survivor can win TdF I can take on anything. I cant count how many times I have ridden in freezing winter or how many times I went to the gym so early that nobody was there. Funny enough I enjoyed most of it as I felt extremely strong. Long story short: It might as well have been an illusion as I never met him, but for me he was and he is a great inspiration.

Tyler Hamilton's book gives a pretty good overview of those times, the need to use performance enhancing substances and techniques to compete at top levels, and what appeared to me to be a pretty unbiased picture of Armstrong and other top echelon bike racers and those they rode for. Hamilton for the most part agrees with Armstrong when he says "we did what we had to do", and it wasn't simple. Not by a long shot! He quotes Armstrong describing top racers as "stone-cold killers" when it came to team politics, and Armstrong seemed to fall into that category. As is pretty common, maybe it's a good idea not to learn too much about your heros. They may not remain your heros. That is one painful sport.

What do you mean for the sake of a big fat lie? He only told that lie because he had to so he could protect himself. Everyone that was biking was also doing what he was doing, if he wanted to compete he had no other choice to do it. They chose to target him because he was the winner so he had to protect himself by saying he wasn't using the PEDs. He's still a champion, he won all those races fairly. Basically every elite athlete is using some form of PEDs, they all have very good doctors who help them beat the system.

I really hate the way he acts like doping is something is something that happened to him rather than the reality that it was a choice he made. @@jokukayttaja3276 firstly, I absolutely rebuff that he had to dope. Plenty of riders didn't and they're the ones we should respect now, not the disgraced shadow-champion. And Lance didn't just dope, he professionalised doping. He industrialised it. He didn't just see what everyone was doing and match it, he brought it to a whole new level that nearly killed the tour. I know you want to believe that he was just matching what everyone else was doing, but that's just not true. Then add to that the way he tried to end the career of anyone who tried to speak out against him - riders, team staff, journalists, whoever it was he actively sought to ruin lives just to protect the greed of what he'd won through his lies. HE CHOSE to do all of that and if you think any different then you're just lying to yourself... In that respect you suit Lance quite well

I honestly think that Armstrong problem was not the doping it self but his inability to be humble. Once he was officially exposed, rather than being open and accept his defeat, he kept arrogantly denying it up to the point his reputation was severely damaged. Even by the time he did the Oprah interview he hadn't grasped how extensive the damaged was done. He was more concern with the law sues than the moral responsibility. This is why his recovery road before the cycling fans and sports in general is going to be a long one.

My beef with Armstrong is that when confronted with proof he chose to s**t all over everyone who posed even a remote threat to his rep. No class buddy. That's not how a real hero acts. Had he just shut his mouth and kept riding and winning (like all the other great winners before him did), people would eventually drop it. Instead, he lost his mind and turned into a raging a**hole.
